"Vaccinate the children", the infectious disease doctor: Measles

The alarm given by the World Health Organization that measles cases in Europe increased 30-fold in 2023 and the identification of more than 17 cases in Albania alone during January has alerted the health structures.

Raida Petrela, professor of the Faculty of Medicine and infectious disease doctor said in an interview for Euronews Albania that the situation requires increased care but not panic.

She called on parents not to hesitate to vaccinate their children with the measles vaccine, while assuring that there is no connection between this vaccine and autism in children.

" I am the one who saw the first three children with measles in the ward, three children from one family, were hospitalized with fever and I immediately suspected measles. Here we began to pay attention to the unvaccinated population and the epidemiological investigation began, with whom they had contact, the cases in Durrës are close between them, so far there are 17 cases.

The biggest call now is for vaccination, in Albania there are 3 quotas; 1 who don't get the vaccine because of their beliefs, one who only gets one dose, and another who doesn't because of fear of autism. He is a myth that has fallen, that the world has studied him. There is no study that proves that the measles vaccine causes autism, the vaccine is mandatory, it is given after the first year of life, since until this age the child has antibodies from the mother , "said the doctor.
