A recent analysis by Eurostat has shown that the roads in the north of Albania are among the most dangerous in Europe in terms of people who lose their lives every year. Data from 2021 show that 94 people lost their lives as a result of road accidents for 1 million inhabitants in the north of the country.
This is a number many times higher than the average of 45 victims per 1 million inhabitants in the entire EU. The road safety expert, Islam Qibini, emphasized in an interview for "Newsline" that accidents occur due to non-compliance with the rules but also due to the infrastructure.
He says the roads in the north are narrow, making overtaking difficult. He also mentioned another factor, the disrespect of traffic rules, especially by young people.
"The Lezhë-Milot axis is a problematic axis due to the road infrastructure. There have been frequent car accidents and they are mainly due to wrong overtaking and due to speed exceeding the permitted rates. Adding here the infrastructure, especially during the rains, the roads contain puddles that often become problematic for drivers.
Even non-implementation of traffic rules by drivers. If you look at the road infrastructure in the north, we have road segments, interurban, secondary roads. Especially from Fushë-Kruja to Mamurras we have a road segment, where the width of the carriageway is narrow and does not allow vehicles to pass. We also have a greater flow of vehicles on this road segment.
We have increased circulation, increased flow on the main axes in the north. The width of the carriageway there is up to 8 meters, where one lane is up to 3.5 meters. This does not allow the opportunity due to the flow of overtaking and mostly accidents on these road segments occur due to wrong overtaking.
Many vehicle drivers, especially the young, are a category of drivers who ignore the rules and their implementation regardless of the vertical signage we have. On these secondary interurban roads, the maximum speed is up to 80 km per hour but many drivers do not follow the rules. They ignore vertical and horizontal signage", said the expert. / ABC News
