After months of speculation, Ukraine's army chief has been fired from his post. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the time had come to renew the leadership structures.
The announcement comes after rumors of a rift between Valery Zaluzhny and the Ukrainian president began circulating months ago in Ukrainian and international media.
Zaluzhny is seen as a national hero by many Ukrainians for overseeing the war effort since February 2022.
Zelensky said Kiev's top general should remain "on his team", hinting he could be given another position.
" The time for such a renewal is now. I proposed to General Zaluzhny to remain part of the team. We will definitely win ," he said.
Zaluzhny confirmed the news on Telegram, saying that the tasks of the army have changed since the outbreak of war in 2022, and everyone must change and adapt to the new realities in order to win together.
" We decided to change our approach and strategy. I am grateful to everyone who is with me, the General Staff, the Ministry of Defense and the President of Ukraine ," said Zaluzhy./ SkyNews
