Lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu has spoken about the situation of fires in Albania.
He said that he sees a connection between the anti-Albanian campaign against tourism and the fires in the last few hours in different parts of the country.
Spahiu says that our country is unprepared for this situation, adding that the institutions are passive.
"I want to say that for several weeks, the media have been involved in an anti-Albanian campaign regarding tourism. It has faced a denigrating campaign, against businesses, against the coast, considering it an abandoned place. Making all businesses vulnerable. Making the Albanian coast vulnerable. Under these conditions, a spirit of disadvantage has been created and I predict the month of August to be more difficult. The criminal element has found a fragile Albania in the face of an anti-national attack. Albania is unprepared in this situation. Albania has very strict legislation regarding crimes against the environment. But we are the champion country that does not punish entities that commit crimes against the environment.
And entities that commit criminal activities remain unpunished. How much is punished by the criminal code for what happened in Shengjin? Up to 20 years of imprisonment. Those who destroy property, from 10 to 20 years of imprisonment. Today in the prisons, there is no subject who has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for setting fires. Criminals feel free to make Albania a burning land. It has an extraordinary terrain because the institutions are passive.
There is a decision of the Prosecutor's Office that orders local institutions to inform the Prosecutor's Office of arson. Local authorities are completely passive. You have seen what happens on every street in Albania, you see smoke and garbage burning. Even if we don't have arson fires, Albania is out of control as trash is burning everywhere. At 40 degrees they burn barbarically and it doesn't even happen in African tourist areas. You don't find this situation where you burn urban waste every 200 meters.
I think that Albania is unprepared as a society, as a government, as a system and as a mentality to prevent crimes against the environment. It is mistreated in a macabre way and I think the sanction is the last resort. Even if we sentence these people to 20 years of imprisonment, it is an element, but it is impossible to change the mentality within a month", said Spahiu for "Report Tv".
