There are 500 employees who have been thrown into the streets, without any warning. While the action comes at a time when the waste scandal has erupted...

The news of a few days ago, that KURUM has decided to close the activity in Elbasan, is confirmed. The employees of the Steel and Sheeting plant have been notified of the termination of the contract.

The latter has been interrupted since August 1 in the sector of the Steel plant, and since August 20 it seems that the rolling plant has also been closed.

There are 500 employees who have been thrown into the streets, without any warning. Meanwhile, the action comes at a time when the waste scandal has erupted. In the Philippines, a ship with more than 800 tons of hazardous waste from KURUM was seized and the prosecution has started investigations. But it seems that at the same time, the company announces the closure. It seems like something bigger is hidden.

The waste scandal

The two ships owned by the Maersk company left at the beginning of July from the Port of Durrës, with the containers carrying about 816 tons of waste inside them. It is about a type of dust that came out of the furnaces of "Kurum" in Elbasan.

Furnace dust is a hazardous waste product that usually comes from steel scrap recycling and contains toxic metal oxides such as cadmium and chromium, which are harmful to health and the environment. This type of dust requires expensive treatment, and Thailand has in recent years been seen as a dumping ground for similar cargoes by many more developed countries.

The transport company Maersk has said that it was not aware of what cargo was inside the containers in Durrës. Nor was the Thai government informed of the type of cargo the two ships were carrying. As soon as they were notified, the Thai authorities stopped the ships from entering.

Now the ships will turn back. The leading ship is called "Maersk Campton" and was loaded with 40 containers, arrived first in Singapore and unloaded the containers on 18 August. The 40 containers will be loaded on the ship named "MARIA SAVERA" which will transport them to Italy. Then another ship will return them to Durrës. The second ship with 60 containers, named Maersk CANDOR, has been off the radar since August 9, a relatively long time, and is expected to arrive in Singapore on August 24. It is estimated that both ships will be at the end of September in the country of origin, i.e. in Albania. / Pamphlet
