From the analyzes conducted by journalists, analyzes that also match the controls of the National Institute of Health, it has resulted that milk and its by-products such as yogurt, cheese and butter of the Lufra brand contain starch, powdered milk, water and especially palm oil, and even aflatoxin, although the product labels advertise that their composition is natural and natural milk fat. The same criminal activity against the health of the population for profit is also practiced by other companies Erzeni, Mirel, Ajka, Gjirofarm, etc.
Arben Ndreka is one of the bosses of the milk and by-products mafia. In all the analyses conducted by investigative journalists, the products of the Lufra brand come out the most contaminated with chemicals. The analyses are also reflected in the denunciations of citizens. “Lufra” has been frequently denounced by citizens on social networks for milk diluted with water, expired and with aflatoxin, a dangerous carcinogenic substance.
To slightly improve its reputation and appear more credible to Albanians, the company "Lufra" uses as a model the cow Lara, which it says is 'the hardest working lady on the farm who brings fresh produce to our tables'. In fact, we are dealing with a fraud. Lufra has neither cows nor sheep. It only has a factory that combines chemicals, selling them for milk, yogurt, buttermilk, cheese, butter, etc.
AKU controls, Lufra and Erzeni crimes against the health of Albanians
From the controls carried out in the territory of Vlora, the AKU has discovered that the contaminated products belong to two of the most popular brands in the country: Lufra and Erzeni. Out of 26 samples taken from January to April 2025, 10 of them have resulted positive and according to specialists, 40% of the controlled milk was contaminated above food safety standards.
Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by a mold that grows on grains, corn, and wheat. When cows eat contaminated feed, aflatoxin is then secreted into the milk they produce. Consumption of milk contaminated with aflatoxin has serious consequences for human health. According to the WHO, aflatoxin is a Group 1 carcinogen, increasing the risk of liver and kidney problems.
This substance is known for its carcinogenic and genotoxic effects, especially dangerous for children and regular milk consumers.
Millions of liters of palm oil in milk
Every year, around 3 million liters of palm oil are imported into Albania through customs points. In 2024, Albania imported a staggering 2.9 million liters of palm oil, which was massively used in the packaged milk processing industry and its by-products.
According to food safety experts, this is a practice that is increasingly replacing natural ingredients, in an effort by the industry to cope with the lack of local production and increasingly high demand, especially during the tourist season.
Experts warn that the drastic decline in the number of cattle in the country has led to a crisis in fresh milk production. Faced with growing demand, especially during periods of tourist influx, the industry has chosen the cheapest, but most dangerous, route: artificial additives.
Palm oil, due to its low cost, is used to increase production volume and reduce prices. But this “economic compromise” brings with it serious risks to public health, especially when it is used clandestinely, without transparency in labeling and without sufficient controls by state institutions.
The palm oil case is not the only one that has shaken citizens' trust. Albania has faced a series of repeated food scandals, from pesticide-laced tangerines to strawberries, chicken contaminated with salmonella, etc.
Lufra benefited from 800 thousand euros from EU funds for agriculture
Funds allocated by the European Union and Albanian taxpayers for agriculture have ended up in the hands of crime and drug bosses, oligarchs, realtors, family members of politicians, etc., but also of businessmen who cheat with milk and its by-products, while real farmers have been left empty-handed.
This is why Brussels notified Albania of the interruption of these funds, following a report by the European Anti-Fraud Office, OLAF, an institution that investigates suspicions of abuse of European Union funds.
Piro Karanxha of the Gjirofarm company, who was charged with faecal yogurt, fraud with serious consequences, and substandard products, along with the owner of Lufra, Arben Ndreka, companies that have been repeatedly reported for fraud with dairy products, for mixing palm oil, starch, and milk powder, have also benefited from the funds for agriculture.
