An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale struck western Turkey on Sunday, felt in major cities such as Istanbul, Izmir and Bursa, the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) announced.
According to Turkish authorities, the tremors were recorded at 12:59 pm (local time) with the epicenter in the Simav region of Kutahya province. The earthquake had a depth of 8.46 kilometers and was also felt in neighboring provinces.
Many residents in Istanbul reported on social media that they felt the tremor, while so far there are no reports of material damage or injuries.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that all AFAD structures and relevant institutions have begun field verifications to assess the situation after the earthquake.
"A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Simav, Kutahya and was also felt in the surrounding provinces. Our teams have immediately started field assessments. I express my condolences to all our citizens affected by this earthquake," said Minister Yerlikaya.
