UEFA: Balogun decision undermines integrity of competition; suspicions of political influence grow after reports of a phone call between Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino

UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA for its decision to suspend the one-match ban of American striker Folarin Balogun, calling it a "red line" being crossed. In an official statement, the European organization emphasizes that the decision is unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.

According to UEFA, the rules can leave room for interpretation in some cases, but not in this situation. The organization warns that if the implementation of the rules is not guaranteed by the responsible institutions themselves, the integrity of the game and the credibility of the competition are put at risk.

The decision has also prompted reactions from other federations. The Belgian Football Federation argues that FIFA regulations provide for an automatic one-match suspension for each red card and is considering legal options. The French Federation is also expected to request a review of a yellow card for Michael Olise, arguing that a precedent has been set.

German Football Association (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf has demanded immediate clarification from FIFA after reports that the decision was preceded by a phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. He said any suspicion of political influence on a sporting decision must be clarified quickly to protect the integrity of the competition.

Meanwhile, a US administration spokesman confirmed to US media that Trump had spoken with Infantino to understand the reasons for the red card and suspension. According to the same source, the US administration also presented additional materials during the appeal process, although the review was conducted by an independent body.

On the other hand, United States coach Mauricio Pochettino defended FIFA's decision. He called it a great decision for football, arguing that Balogun's red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina was unfair.

The decision has also drawn criticism from prominent football figures. Jürgen Klopp criticised the lack of transparency and warned that political interference would damage the credibility of the sport. Norway coach Ståle Solbakken also called the decision a big mistake that could negatively affect the tournament.

Balogun was given a red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to FIFA regulations, such a card automatically carries a suspension of at least one match. However, FIFA decided to suspend the application of the punishment, referring to Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code, which allows for the conditional suspension of disciplinary measures in certain circumstances.
