The stance marks a change, as the President had previously demanded that Tehran never be allowed to enrich uranium...
President Donald Trump said Friday that a 20-year moratorium on Iran's nuclear program would be enough for him to accept a deal and end the war. Allowing Iran to enrich uranium at some point in the future, even after decades, marks a shift in the president's stance. Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran should never be allowed to do so.
The Trump administration had previously denied that it would accept anything less than a complete surrender and permanent end to Iran's nuclear ambitions, although various reports suggested that the US was negotiating behind the scenes for a timeline.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned from a two-day summit in China, Trump said Tehran's latest proposal did not provide sufficient guarantees.
"Twenty years is enough, but the level of guarantee from them is not enough," he said, adding, "in other words, it should be 20 years realistically."
Trump said he reviewed Iran's latest proposal and rejected it. "If they have any form of nuclear capability, I'm not reading the rest of it," he added.
According to the source text, the 12-day war has damaged Iran's ability to enrich new material for the foreseeable future. However, Tehran still holds about 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, which Washington is seeking to hand over.
Trump said he remains optimistic that Iran will eventually accept a deal. He added that Iranian officials have told him that only the United States and China have the equipment to remove what he called "nuclear dust."
Earlier this week, Trump called Tehran's latest peace proposal "totally unacceptable." It was one of several that the US and Iran have exchanged since Pakistan brokered a ceasefire between the sides on April 8.
