Now, the Chinese president's real "trap" is the fall of the US.
Stanford University political scientist and economist Francis Fukuyama gave his analysis of US-China bilateral relations and Beijing's strategy.
Fukuyama, who was associated with the rise of neoconservatives in the US, became internationally known in 1992 with the publication of his book "The End of History and the Last Man", following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Xi seeks to buy time until the US weakens
Now, the Chinese president's real "trap" is the fall of the US.
"Xi is simply trying to buy time, waiting for the United States to self-destruct and lose its superpower status," Fukuyama said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
"Donald Trump went to the meeting with Xi Jinping much weaker than his Chinese counterpart. Trapped in the war in the Middle East, from which he does not know how to get out. And with a decline in the polls, having lost popularity precisely because of the increase in prices caused by the war, combined with the tariffs he imposed himself and the deterioration of his mental state. Meanwhile, Xi already has the economic and military strategy to cope with it , "said Francis Fukuyama.
The Chinese president welcomed Trump by referring to the "Thucydides trap," a clear call not to fall into the fatal mistake of ending in war. Fukuyama estimates that there may not be a military conflict, but economic and geopolitical competition will continue.
"There may not be a war, but it is difficult to avoid economic and strategic competition between two countries like China and the United States, which have such different objectives and political systems. The issue is elsewhere: Xi believes that America is in a long-term decline, which Trump himself partly attributes to him. That is why he caresses him with symbolic gestures, tells him that they are equal partners and superpowers, but in reality he simply expects America to weaken more and more," he said.
Xi also seeks concessions for Taiwan
According to Fukuyama, Xi's strategy does not consist solely of waiting for the US to weaken.
"He is asking for concessions on Taiwan. And unfortunately, the island is the only thing Trump can offer him today to achieve at least the appearance of a trade deal and some symbolic support for opening the Strait of Hormuz. In my opinion, everything revolves around that," Fukuyama said.
The Americans have already blocked an arms package worth $11 billion destined for Taipei.

Sa i përket delegacionit të nivelit të lartë që shoqëroi Trump në Kinë dhe që përfshinte disa nga njerëzit më të pasur në botë, si Elon Musk dhe Tim Cook i Apple, Fukuyama shpjegoi se qëllimi ishte mbrojtja e investimeve ekzistuese amerikane dhe jo ushtrimi i presionit ndaj Kinës për të hapur tregun për kapitale të reja amerikane.
Si Tesla ashtu edhe Apple kanë tashmë interesa të rëndësishme në Kinë dhe synojnë t’i mbrojnë ato.
Trump do të humbasë zgjedhjet e mesmandatit
“Trump përpiqet, të paktën, të shkëpusë ekonominë amerikane nga ajo kineze. Dhe kërkon ta mbajë Pekinin jashtë sektorit të teknologjisë amerikane. Nuk shoh shenja të para të një bashkëpunimi ekonomik thelbësor. Çështje tjetër është sektori bujqësor, produktet e të cilit përbëjnë eksportin kryesor amerikan drejt Kinës”, tha politologu.
I pyetur se çfarë do të përfitojnë të dy liderët nga kjo afrim, Fukuyama deklaroi:
“Kina kërkon vetëm të fitojë kohë, duke pritur që Shtetet e Bashkuara të dëmtojnë më tej veten dhe të humbasin statusin e superfuqisë. Ndërsa Trump do të flasë për marrëveshjen më të madhe tregtare të arritur ndonjëherë në histori, edhe nëse bëhet fjalë vetëm për pak sojë. Por nga ky takim nuk do të dalë asgjë e rëndësishme në planin afatgjatë”.
Lidhur me tezën që ai kishte shprehur pas vitit 1992, se “fundi i historisë” thjesht është shtyrë, dhe nëse beson se institucionet amerikane do të rezistojnë, Fukuyama parashikoi:
"The second Trump administration is really trying to undermine its own mechanisms of checks and balances. However, I am convinced that American institutions will resist. Trump will lose the midterm elections, and this will limit the damage he can cause. Of course, in the meantime, he has stopped funding scientific research. And, in the long run, this will significantly weaken the United States in the face of China. In short, the path to the 'end of history' has not stopped, but it certainly faces significant obstacles."
