At least 21 people were killed and 83 others injured, including 7 children, after a ballistic missile attack on the center of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the "terrible" attack hit an ordinary city street, while indicating that a rescue operation is underway in the country.
Zelensky calls on global leaders to respond decisively to the attack, adding that "Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging out this war."
"We need a stance towards Russia that a terrorist deserves. Thank you to everyone who is with Ukraine and helping us protect lives," Zelensky added.
Zelensky also expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The attack took place in a part of Ukraine where Russian forces are thought to be preparing for a major offensive, the BBC reports.
Kiev has warned for weeks that Moscow could intensify its attack on Sumy, about 50 kilometers from the border.
Last month, Russia claimed to have occupied a village in the Sumy region for the first time since the early days of its occupation in 2022.
