According to analysis of maritime data and international media reports, several merchant ships appear to have taken advantage of a brief opening in the Strait of Hormuz to exit the Persian Gulf, at the height of tensions with Iran.

Two of the three ships targeted by Iran appear to have been part of a convoy belonging to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world's largest shipping operator. Sources suggest that a short window of passage on Friday may have prompted their attempt to quickly pass through the area.

The MSC Francesca and MSC Epaminondas, along with four others, had been stranded in the Persian Gulf since before the conflict escalated. However, four of them – MSC Clara, MSC Grace, MSC Margrit XIII and MSC Madeleine – have now reached the eastern Arabian Sea.

According to transmitter data analyzed by specialist company Linerlytica, these ships have turned off their tracking systems during the passage, a practice used to hide their position in high-risk areas.

Two other container ships also managed to leave the area. In contrast, the MSC Francesca and MSC Epaminondas did not suffer the same fate. They were detained by Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces for inspection.

There has been no official response from MSC, a company that usually keeps a low public profile. Although headquartered in landlocked Switzerland, MSC handles about 20% of global goods transported by sea.
