An Italian who volunteered for the Russian army was captured by Ukrainian special forces in Donbass. His name is Gianni Cenni, born on August 19, 1973, according to what is written in the military booklet issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense and from a document that also states the date of registration, on November 13, 2024, in Military Unit 58198, Armored Regiment.
The Ukrainian army arrested the Italian between January 7 and 8 between the Kupyansk area and the Lugansk region, possibly in a reconnaissance and intelligence operation behind enemy lines.
Originally from Campania, there is no trace of him on social networks, apart from an old Linkedin page, where he mentions as one of his previous jobs that of pizza chef at the restaurant 'The President's Daughter' in Naples, i who however denies knowing him. Thanks to the work of Osint (intelligence on open sources) it became possible to trace his last work activity in Russia, in the city of Samara, the capital of the region of the same name on the Volga River, where he always worked as a pizza chef . in the Italian restaurant 'Anima'.
But Italy's honorary consul in Samara, Gianguido Brebbo, an entrepreneur in the restaurant sector who worked with Gianni Cenni, said "he was my employee until about a year ago, then he left". "I knew he had moved to the south of Volgograd, but I don't remember exactly where. He was a special type, Neapolitan, with a high character and, well, knowing now that he went to fight no longer it's surprising," he said.
According to Honorary Consul Brebbo, Cenni had arrived in Russia after previous work experience in Finland and was reported by acquaintances to be a good pizza chef with previous experience.
Several videos on the Instagram account of Samara's restaurant and Italian cooking school, managed by Consul Brebbo, portray him at work and explain the secrets of pizza and advertise a 'masterclass' with Cenni held on June 15, 2023 right inside the Restaurant' Anima' together with Brebbo. The honorary consul is a very popular person in Samara.
Numerous photos portray him with Italian diplomatic staff at conferences and economic forums or in the kitchen, his true passion, but also some excessive photos of admiration for Putin, perhaps for a representative of the Italian Republic abroad, like the image of 2015 .which portrays him, after the Russian occupation of Crimea and after the occupation of Donbass, in a T-shirt with the face of President Putin and a bear and the words "I am a friend of Putin".
What prompted a Neapolitan pizza chef to enlist in the Russian army and end up in a trench in Ukraine is currently unclear even if, as usual, most Russian and international volunteers fighting for Putin do so for economic gain rather than security because of ideology.
