The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, proposed that Ukrainian and Moldovan legislators participate in the assembly as "observer" members, while both countries wait for membership in the European Union.
The observer MEPs for Ukraine and Moldova will not have the right to vote and will be appointed and not elected, but will have seats in the institution.
"We will have to see when that happens," Metsola said.
The EU designated Ukraine and Moldova as candidate countries last year, shortly after Russia invaded the country.
Metsola has since requested that formal accession negotiations begin this year.
"Enlargement has always been the strongest geopolitical tool of the European Union", she said.
EU leaders are expected to decide whether to formally launch Ukraine and Moldova's accession negotiations at a summit in December, after first analyzing a European Commission report.
Metsola was the first EU leader to visit Kiev, meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesny on April 1 last year.
However, we recall that the former president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said in a recent interview that corruption in Ukraine should make the EU think twice about the country's membership.
