An Air India flight bound for London with 242 passengers and crew on board crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad International Airport today. Video footage shows the plane struggling to take off before crashing into a residential area seconds later.
While we are often told that flying by plane is one of the safest modes of transportation, pilots and aviation experts say that takeoff and landing are the most dangerous parts of a flight.
CNN Transportation Analyst Mary Schiavo attributes the higher accident rates in these phases of flight to the hazards and maneuvers required to take off and land at an airport.
" Airports place a lot more stress on pilots, air traffic controllers and aircraft. Takeoffs and landings are not taken lightly. Pilots are trained and retrained to react if something goes wrong during these crucial moments ," Schiavo said.
Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, said pilots have a myriad of checklists they run through to accomplish these tasks. In fact, during takeoff, the FAA does not allow any unnecessary talking or activity below 10,000 feet.
"It's very important that your full attention is on one thing, and that's flying the plane straight. For the actual takeoff flight, you have a heavier weight. You're accelerating from zero to the speed of being able to fly ," he said.
