At least 294 people have died after an Air India plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport in India on Thursday. In addition to the passengers on board, the accident also killed several students inside the BJ Medical College and Hospital dormitory where the plane crashed.
The plane was en route to London's Gatwick Airport and was carrying 169 Indian, 53 British, 1 Canadian and 7 Portuguese nationals, of whom only 1 survived the crash. Five medical students also died in the tragic accident and 50 others were seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Air India's parent company, Tata Group, has pledged to provide around £86,000 to the families of each person who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash.
A statement attributed to Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Air India, said that the medical expenses of the injured will also be covered.
"We remain steadfast in our stance to support the families and communities affected in this unimaginable time ," he said, among other things.
