Air India has been in business for more than 90 years, having started operations in 1932. Its planes have been involved in serious accidents, as well as a number of safety-related incidents. Last year alone, four incidents were recorded shortly after takeoff, fortunately without injuries.

The most recent serious accidents before today's tragedy in Ahmedabad occurred in 2010 and 2020, but the history of serious events begins in the 1940s. In one case, the cause of the disaster was a terrorist attack.

In December 1947, a Douglas C-48C aircraft flying from Karachi to Mumbai crashed, killing all 23 people on board. In 1950, a Douglas C-47B crashed in India, killing another 23 people. Another Douglas C-47A crashed on takeoff in 1951, killing one person.

Another Douglas C-47A crashed in India in 1953, killing 18. In 1955, the company was hit by another tragedy when a pilot attempted to ditch the plane after a bomb exploded on board – an event that claimed the lives of 16 passengers and crew.

Air India has also lost two aircraft in Switzerland under similar circumstances. In 1950, an Air India plane crashed into the Mont Blanc mountain range, killing all 48 people on board. On January 24, 1966, a Boeing 707 crashed while approaching Geneva, killing all 117 people on board.

One of the biggest tragedies in the company's history occurred on January 1, 1978, when a Boeing 747 flying from Mumbai to Dubai crashed into the Arabian Sea. The plane crashed less than two minutes after takeoff due to a faulty indicator that led to the captain misinterpreting the direction. The incident, which occurred at night, resulted in the deaths of all 213 people on board.

Four years later, on June 21, 1982, a Boeing 707 crashed while attempting to land in Mumbai in bad weather. The landing failure caused the plane to hit obstacles and burst into flames, killing 17 of the 111 people on board.

Another major event in Air India's history occurred on June 23, 1985, when Flight 182, a Boeing 747 flying from Montreal to Delhi with a stopover in London, exploded in mid-air off the coast of Ireland. The explosion was caused by a bomb planted by Sikh extremists. All 329 people on board, including 268 Canadian citizens, were killed.

In May 2010, an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway while landing at Mangalore and crashed into a gorge, killing 158 people. The accident led to a review of flight safety protocols in India.

Ten years later, in August 2020, another Boeing 737-800, operated by Air India Express, skidded off the runway during heavy rains at Karipur. The plane broke into two and 21 of the 190 people on board died, including the two pilots.
