The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, dismissed on Friday the heads of all recruitment centers in all regions of the country, under accusations of corruption which, according to him, can be described as high treason.
" We are dismissing all regional commissars of the army ," Zelensky said on social networks, after a meeting with the army's senior leadership.
" This system must be led by people who know exactly what war is, and why cynicism and bribery in wartime is high treason ," he added.
Kiev is conscripting Ukrainians into assault battalions in its counter-offensive against Russian forces in an attempt to free the country from Moscow's occupation troops.
The decision reflects Ukraine's efforts to fight bribery and corruption as part of deep reforms demanded by Western institutions such as the European Union, which Ukraine hopes to join.
" During the inspection of recruitment centers, law enforcement agencies discovered cases of corruption," the Ukrainian presidency said in a press release.
The presidency added that these "constitute a threat to Ukraine's national security and undermine trust in state institutions."
The Security Council of Ukraine recommended that the army chief select replacements who have experience on the battlefield and who have been vetted by Ukraine's intelligence services./ REL
