Several regions in Turkey were hit yesterday evening by a powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, which spread quite a bit of panic among residents in Dijarbakır, Antalya and Malatya.
Speaking in the Turkish media about these oscillations, the geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür warned that others will follow, not only in the above-mentioned areas, but also in Adana, Kayseri, Adıyaman and Hakkari.
This, according to Görür, is related to the fact that these provinces are close to the region where Eastern Anatolia also lies. Meanwhile, lighter tremors were recorded in Diyarbakir, where an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 was reported at a depth of 16.81 kilometers. After that, tremors were also recorded in Antalya and Malatia.
"I have stated before that it would not be surprising if earthquakes of this nature occur in this region. It is very natural. Now the region of Eastern Anatolia is separated by the Bitlis-Zagros mountain range on the Arabian plate which is constantly moving northwards towards Eurasia. Most of Anatolia is approaching Greece. If the recurrence period is 500 years, then the power will accumulate and there will be another devastating earthquake," says Dr. Naci Görür.
