Serious allegations of systematic use of sexual violence as a means to suppress anti-government protests in Iran have been documented in international reports, with human rights organizations reporting practices aimed at intimidating and suppressing the opposition.
According to data presented in relevant reports, security forces and paramilitary groups, such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), are alleged to have consistently used sexual abuse, rape, and torture against protesters, including minors.
A report by Amnesty International says thousands of people are at risk of sexual violence, with cases of abuse involving children being recorded. Girls as young as 12 are said to have been raped, with the alleged aim of causing "long-term physical and psychological harm to protesters".
According to the DailyMail, at least 45 survivors, including men, women and children, have testified to being gang-raped and subjected to other forms of sexual violence during the protests.
Reports of attacks on healthcare professionals allegedly helping injured protesters are causing a particular stir. According to complaints, nurses who provided care to the wounded have been arrested, and in some cases are alleged to have suffered serious abuse. There are also reports that security forces have occupied hospitals, threatening staff and obstructing care for the wounded.
Chronology of repression
The allegations are part of a broader history of the use of force to suppress protests in Iran, as was also recorded in the 2022 protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini.
International organizations argue that these practices are part of a conscious strategy to suppress social protests and prevent new protests.
At the same time, there are reports of widespread human rights violations, with arbitrary executions, mass arrests, and restrictions on fundamental freedoms.
