Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) achieved its worst result in history – and initial election analyses provide an indication of why: The Social Democrats were disappointed on one of the most important issues – immigration.
The opinion institute Infratest-Dimap asked former SPD voters what was their most important issue in these elections, Bild.de writes.
The most frequent answer given by former SPD voters was: immigration!
For 20 percent of all former SPD voters, immigration played the biggest role in these elections – ahead of the topics of social security and internal security (19 percent each) as well as the environment and climate (17 percent) and economic growth (13 percent).
The result: The SPD lost more than 1.7 million voters to the CDU/CSU and 720,000 to the AfD. The losses to left-wing parties are smaller: 560,000 went to the Left Party, 440,000 to the BSW and only 100,000 to the Greens.
Another blow to the stomach: Only 12 percent of workers voted for the former SPD workers' party. They clearly favor the AfD (38 percent) or the CDU/CSU (22 percent)!
Also bitter: The SPD apparently failed to convince its target group when it came to social security either. Among voters with a poor financial situation, only 12 percent voted for the SPD (AfD: 39, Union: 17 percent).
During the election campaign, SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz never tired of emphasizing that his government had done everything to limit illegal immigration to Germany. BUT: His party rejected the CDU/CSU chancellor candidate's plan to close the borders to illegal immigrants. This initiative was also extremely popular with SPD voters.
After the disappointing election result, the CDU/CSU should also ask itself whether it should have emphasized the most important issue for its voters more strongly.
Both existing and new CDU/CSU voters answered the question about the most important issue: economic growth (31 and 32 percent, respectively). The topics of immigration and internal security came in far behind at 18 to 21 percent.
During the election campaign, the CDU/CSU was always considered to have the greatest competence when it comes to the economy. After Friedrich Merz's "all-in" maneuver, immigration became a dominant topic of the election campaign - as well as the question of whether laws could be passed in the Bundestag with the help of AfD votes.
