Turkey has announced that it may join the lawsuit at the International Court of Justice filed by South Africa, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
"I would like to announce for the first time that we have decided to join the case of South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice," Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Wednesday at a joint press conference with his counterpart. Indonesian.
Fidan, as reported by Bloomberg, also said that Turkey has spent time preparing a formal application to join the case.
" We will finish the legal work and then we will deal with what we can do more with the allied countries ," he said.
South Africa took its case to the International Court of Justice in December. Shortly thereafter, in January, the Hague Tribunal, in an interim ruling, told Israel that it must act to prevent the deaths of innocent Palestinians. The court did not demand an immediate ceasefire.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called Hamas men "freedom fighters" while repeatedly criticizing Israel's behavior since the October 7, 2013 attacks by Hamas.
Unlike the US and the European Union, Turkey does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. More than 34,000 Palestinians, both civilians and Hamas fighters, have been killed since the war began. Many of the civilians who have lost their lives are children.
