"Red" alert for bad weather in Britain and Ireland, hit by storm

"Red" alert in Britain and Ireland. Storm "Amy" has caused major disruption to public life, such as school closures, travel cancellations and a high risk to the safety of citizens.

The storm developed in the North Atlantic as a result of the interaction of the remnants of hurricanes Humberto and Imelda with a powerful water current.

Due to the storm, the decision has been made in Northern Ireland for schools in counties Antrim, Londonderry, Tyrone and Fermanagh to close at noon to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Meanwhile, in the Republic of Ireland, authorities in County Donegal have advised residents to "shelter in place" until 6pm, due to strong winds affecting the area.

The impact of the storm has also been widely felt on transport. A number of ferry journeys between Cairnryan (Scotland) and Northern Ireland have been cancelled since midday on Friday, according to Police Scotland.

Passengers are advised not to travel to ports without first checking with the relevant ferry companies for updates. In northern Scotland, rail company ScotRail has warned of some line closures from 6pm on Friday, while the remaining network will see speed restrictions from 7pm.

Sport has also been affected by the storm, with the rugby championship match between Edinburgh and Ulster, scheduled to take place at the Hive Stadium in the Scottish capital, postponed to another date due to the dangerous weather.

The British and Irish Met Offices have issued a series of weather warnings. Yellow warnings are in place for strong winds in the north and west of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland on Friday, as well as heavy rainfall in parts of England, Scotland and Ireland.

In Ireland, County Donegal is under a red wind warning until 6pm, indicating the highest level of risk.

Saturday is expected to bring a continuation of severe weather conditions, with yellow wind warnings in place across Scotland, northern England and the westernmost parts of Wales from 3pm on Friday until 11.59pm on Saturday. Further wind and rain warnings will also be in place for the rest of England and Wales throughout Saturday. Orkney and Shetland, in northeast Scotland, are also under a strong wind warning from midnight until 9am on Sunday.

In addition to the winds, heavy rains on Friday and Saturday increase the risk of local flooding, especially in urban areas and those with poor drainage.
