Belgium's defense ministry has launched an investigation after 15 drones were spotted Thursday evening over the Elsenborn military base, near the German border, local media reported.
The Ministry of Defense said on Friday that the investigation is still ongoing, as it is not clear where the drones came from or who was operating them, but reports suggest they were heading towards Germany after flying over the base.
The incident in Belgium occurred during a period of increased incidents of drones disrupting European airspace.
That same evening, a separate incident at Munich Airport forced air traffic authorities to temporarily suspend flights, leading to the cancellation of 17 flights and affecting almost 3,000 passengers.
Authorities also said 15 inbound flights were diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt.
In recent weeks, airports in Denmark and Norway have also suspended operations due to the appearance of drones in their airspace, sparking debate in European circles about the possibility of creating a "drone wall" on the continent's eastern flank as a shield against Russian aggression.
In the most serious incident, several Russian attack drones crossed into Polish airspace, triggering a state of emergency and the activation of allied defense systems.
