The ship "Ambition"

More than 1,700 people remain in quarantine on board the cruise ship "Ambition", anchored in the Gironde estuary near Bordeaux, in southwestern France, after the death of a passenger and the emergence of suspected cases of gastroenteritis.

According to a joint statement from the Gironde prefecture and French regional health authorities, there are 1,233 passengers on board, mainly British and Irish, as well as 514 crew members.

Authorities said that about 50 passengers have shown symptoms consistent with an acute gastrointestinal infection, which activated health protocols foreseen for such cases.

As a precautionary measure, local authorities temporarily suspended disembarkation of passengers and crew, while limiting the ship's contact with the port. At the same time, specialized health teams continue to conduct checks and interventions on board.

French authorities stressed that there is no link between this case and recent hantavirus cases reported on the MV Hondius ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Gironde prefecture announced that laboratory tests are still underway to identify the pathogenic agent that caused the symptoms and to assess the risk of spread.

Initial tests ruled out the presence of norovirus, which is considered one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis on cruise ships. However, health authorities are not ruling out the possibility of food poisoning.

According to preliminary information, the peak of symptoms, mainly vomiting and diarrhea, was recorded on May 11, when the ship was in Brest, France.
