The alarm has sounded, but no one seems to have heard it. Donald Trump's latest ultimatum to Vladimir Putin (accept a bilateral meeting with Zelensky or there will be very serious consequences) has expired, but nothing is moving.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is knocking on the door of the White House.
"Two weeks ago in Washington, it was said that this was the necessary timeframe for Russia to be ready for real talks and a meeting between leaders. Ukraine is definitely ready. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing in another war. All its signals point in that direction."
Grief and awareness are evident in the words of the Ukrainian leader, who is then trying to reorient himself, once again, towards an extremely active Brussels.
A meeting of leaders of the coalition of the willing in support of Ukraine is planned. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday in Paris, chaired by Macron and Starmer. Zelensky will still have direct contact with leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will be connected remotely.
"We are planning such a meeting between Zelensky and European leaders," Brussels confirmed, explaining that Trump's participation is not currently planned.
Like it or not, the key to everything remains. "Everyone appreciates President Trump's diplomatic efforts. The problem is that Putin is making a mockery of these efforts," said EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas.
"Everyone else welcomes them because Europeans want peace, Ukrainians want peace. And even Americans want peace. The one who doesn't want peace is Putin, who is fomenting conflict. And as long as Russia continues to want war, there will be no peace," she added.
That is why Zelensky is not the only one knocking on the doors of the White House, hoping for an answer, but above all, a concrete and strong answer.
Meanwhile, work continues behind the scenes to finalize guarantees for Ukraine after the conflict ends. This is a crucial step, because without security, the end of the conflict risks being just a brief interruption.
"Commission representatives are participating in these discussions at a technical level. The President is in constant contact with the leaders to take forward discussions with them on these technical engagements," confirms EU Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podestà.
"A plan, a clear roadmap, is taking shape. President von der Leyen stated that a fairly detailed plan has been developed for this type of cooperation, but all of this still requires political decisions from the states involved, because, for example, diplomacy is clearly a national competence.
But the sense of urgency surrounding the current war situation demands that everything possible be done to ensure that Ukraine is in a position of strength if Russia decides to sit down at the negotiating table.
