Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin has proposed a reshuffle that would see veteran defense minister Sergei Shoigu replaced by Andrei Belousov.

According to foreign media, he is a name that we have not heard much during the war, but as defense minister he will become a key figure.

But who is Andrei Belousov?

According to Sky News, the 65-year-old graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University in 1981.

He was appointed adviser to the Russian Prime Minister in 2000 and joined the Ministry of Economy in 2006.

Between 2008 and 2012 he served as director of the economy and finance department under Vladimir Putin.

Belousov was appointed economy minister in 2012 and then served as an adviser to the Russian president from 2013 to 2020.

After that he was deputy prime minister – with a brief stint serving as prime minister when Mikhail Mishustin contracted COVID-19 in 2020.

Unlike previous defense ministers, Belousov does not have a military background.

But he is believed to be close to Putin.
