Switzerland/ Parliament faces the people, minimum wage law heads to referendum

Trade unions and left-wing parties in Switzerland have officially started collecting signatures for a referendum against a decision by the Federal Parliament that, according to them, could weaken minimum wages approved by cantons and municipalities.

The draft law provides that collective labor agreements of general application shall take precedence over minimum wages established at the cantonal or municipal level.

Opponents of the measure argue that the change could reduce the level of protection for workers in low-wage sectors, such as gastronomy, hotels and cleaning services. According to the referendum committee, this constitutes an infringement on wages and direct democracy, as decisions approved by citizens in cantons and municipalities could be overridden. They also point out that about two-thirds of the people who could be affected by the measure are women.

The Federal Council has also expressed opposition to the bill, assessing that it conflicts with the constitutional powers of the cantons to set minimum wages.

To put the issue to a popular vote, the organizers must collect 50,000 valid signatures within the deadline stipulated by law. If this condition is met, Swiss citizens will decide in a referendum whether the law will enter into force or be rejected.
