Ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Albania abstains from the UN resolution

The UN General Assembly has called for an immediate and lasting humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and demanded unhindered aid access to the Gaza Strip.

The Jordanian-drafted motion is non-binding but carries political weight, reflecting the degree to which the US and Israel are isolated internationally as Israel ramps up its ground attacks.

The resolution was adopted with 120 votes in favor, 45 abstentions and 14 votes against, including Israel and the US, who voted against. Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro voted in favor of the resolution, Croatia was against, while Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece abstained. The resolution does not name Hamas, which is holding hostage some 220 civilians who were captured during the devastating October 7 attacks.

The resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians illegally held captive and demands their safety and humane treatment while condemning attacks on Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

The resolution also calls for essential supplies to be allowed into the Gaza Strip and for humanitarian workers to have sustained access. It also calls on Israel to rescind its order for people in Gaza to evacuate the north and move south, and firmly rejects any attempt to forcibly transfer the Palestinian civilian population. The resolution emphasizes the need to urgently establish a mechanism to ensure the protection of the Palestinian civilian population.

"It sends a message to everyone, enough is enough. This war must stop, the massacre against our people must stop and humanitarian aid must start entering the Gaza Strip," Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour told reporters.

After pressure from the US and Canada, a bid to condemn Hamas by name and demand the immediate release of hostages was approved by 88 to 55, but failed to win the required two-thirds majority. Jordan had originally called for an immediate ceasefire, but in an effort to maximize support, amended the draft to call for an immediate and lasting humanitarian ceasefire leading to a cessation of hostilities.

It is the first time the UN has reached a collective view on the Middle East crisis, after four attempts to reach a common position for the smaller 15-member UN Security Council failed due to vetoes exercised by Russia or the US.
