Clashes intensify, Mitsotakis hits Skopje again over the name issue: VMRO to

The nationalist rhetoric of the new government of North Macedonia continues to be condemned by the USA and the EU. The most affected by this rhetoric is certainly Greece, after the statement of the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Mickoski, who said that he will call his country whatever he wants and if Athens has any problem going to The Hague, the Greek Prime Minister has responded again. Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

After the provocative statements of the prime minister and the new president, tensions between the two countries have increased.

In an interview for ERT, Mistotskis has warned VMRO to stop provocations and fully respect the Prespa Agreement, which provides for the recognition of the country as "North Macedonia".

"I want to send a warning message to the new government, to respect the central provision of the Prespa Agreement, to use the name of North Macedonia, otherwise it will create a problem, not only in the relations between Greece and North Macedonia, but also in Europe and North Macedonia" , he said, reminding the government of Skopje of the condemning statements of Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel.

In particular, as Mitsotakis mentioned, there have been direct interventions by the government of Athens to inform the EU about the approach being followed by the nationalist party that just won the elections.

I personally intervened to inform the leadership of the European Union about the statements of the President of North Macedonia. There were condemnations from both the President of the Commission and the President of the Council and the United States. So, I believe that a general pressure will be exerted on the leadership of North Macedonia."

Mitsotakis clarified that the Greek government will not submit for ratification the following three memoranda stipulated by the Prespa Agreement, creating precedents that hinder North Macedonia's path to EU membership. He described them as Athens' "additional weapons" in the face of Mickoski's nationalist frenzy.

"We have seen what was happening in North Macedonia for a long time. We were listening to this VMRO nationalist frenzy, we knew VMRO was going to win the election and we wanted to keep some real negotiating weapons in case things didn't go as some might expect. And I consider it unimaginable, bordering on political and diplomatic absurdity, that SYRIZA, which is the one who charged us with this problematic agreement, would come and ask now that we see that Skopje follows a completely different line, which we now ratify memoranda. What does this mean? I find it really hard to understand. We will make it absolutely clear that no progress on this road, Skopje's long road to Europe, can be achieved without absolute respect for the Prespa agreement on the name issue", he underlined.
