A number of NATO allies appear to be taking steps toward sending troops to Ukraine to train the armed forces there.
According to foreign media, many US military contractors are already in Ukraine to repair weapons systems supplied by Washington.
The government in Kiev has asked the US and NATO to help train 150 new recruits inside Ukraine as it faces troop shortages in the war against Russia.
Foreign media also claim that such a step would mark another crossing of red lines, and could bring the US and the European Union closer to a direct war with Russia. The Biden administration has publicly opposed the sending of instructors, but the chief of staff thinks that something like this is inevitable.
According to the New York Times, the United States would have to protect any NATO instructors inside Ukraine from attack, which would potentially involve America in the war.
French President Emmanuel Macron was the first to speak about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine during February.
Estonia and Lithuania have supported sending either instructors or support troops to enable Ukrainian soldiers to engage in combat duties.
The reports come after National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that a new weapons package will be announced in the coming days.
