In a statement from the Oval Office where he hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, President Donald Trump rejected claims that Israel's plans to attack Iran prompted the US to launch military strikes.
He said that, instead, it may have been the US that forced Israel to act.
"They would attack if we didn't. They would attack first, I was convinced of that. If something happened, I could have forced Israel's hand. But Israel was ready and we were ready. We had a very, very powerful impact, because almost everything they have is destroyed. Now the number of their missiles is dropping significantly," Trump declared.
A day earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had suggested that the president decided to launch attacks on Iran because the US believed that Israel was close to taking unilateral action.
Among other things, the US president stated that the "worst case scenario" for Iran would be for "someone just as bad as the previous person" to take power.
"This could happen. We don't want it to happen. We would like to see someone give the place back to the people and then we'll see what happens," he said.
He added that some of the leadership candidates the US administration had considered have already been killed. “Very soon we will not recognize anyone anymore,” he said.
According to Trump, a figure from within the system might be better suited to lead the country. “It would make more sense that someone from within would be better suited, if there is such a person. We have such people… more moderate,” he declared.
