Umar Dzhabrailov

Russian tycoon Umar Dzhabrailov was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head at around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, Russian media outlet Kommersant reported, citing police sources describing the case as a possible suicide.

According to the same sources, a Luger pistol was found near the 67-year-old's body. Russian media reports that he had also attempted suicide in 2020 and that no note was found at the scene.

Dzhabrailov's name came back into the spotlight after the publication of emails by the US Department of Justice as part of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

In an email dated May 24, 2001, he wrote to Ghislaine Maxwell that he had returned from London and was planning to travel to Moscow, asking to know the exact time of her arrival to organize the reception.

According to the released documents, Maxwell responded the next day announcing that she, Epstein and a person identified as Tom would travel to Moscow the following week.

After Maxwell's conviction for aiding and abetting Epstein's sexual abuse of minors, Dzhabrailov publicly stated that he knew Epstein through Maxwell, whom he described as "one of his soulmates." He stressed that he had no knowledge of the criminal activities for which Maxwell was convicted.

Dzhabrailov, born in Chechnya, was the owner of the Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel & Business Center in Moscow and ran a company that oversees shopping malls in Russia. He also served as a senator in the Federation Council for the North Caucasus Republic from 2004 to 2009.

Russian authorities are continuing investigations to clarify the full circumstances of the death.
