At least 71 people have died in a serious road accident in Herat province, in western Afghanistan.
The tragic incident occurred during the early hours of the morning, when a bus carrying deported migrants collided with a truck and a motorcycle, causing a large fire that engulfed the vehicle.
According to provincial government spokesman Ahmadullah Mutaki, the collision occurred on one of the busiest sections of the road connecting Herat to Kabul.
The bus, filled with returning migrants, veered off the main road due to high speed and lack of control by the driver. It crashed first into a motorbike and then into a truck, causing an explosion and then a massive fire.

Authorities confirm that 71 people have died in the country, including 17 children. Several others were seriously injured and rushed to area hospitals. Most of the victims were people returning to Kabul after being expelled from neighboring countries.
The local police have issued an official statement, saying that “speeding beyond the permitted limits and the carelessness of the bus driver were the main causes of the accident.” Investigations to fully clarify the circumstances are ongoing.
Footage from the scene shows gruesome scenes – the bus almost completely burned out, the bodies of the victims and firefighters' efforts to extinguish the flames and rescue those who may have survived.
This is one of the worst road accidents to have occurred in Afghanistan in recent years. Deteriorated road infrastructure, lack of vehicle control, and violations of traffic rules are factors that continue to contribute to the high number of accidents in this country.
Local authorities have declared a day of mourning in Herat and have called for international assistance to cope with the consequences of this disaster.
