By now Harris has the ball and is speeding towards the goal line!
Less than a week after President Biden withdrew from the race, Donald Trump is in trouble. Vice President Harris has gained momentum. Trump's best move recently was a round with professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau. I suspect it does for middle class voters. Meanwhile, Harris is popping up all over the internet and mobilizing the Democratic base in battleground states. The latest poll shows that it has closed the gap between Trump and Biden.
Trump's problems
Trump's campaign was entirely geared toward running against an aging Joe Biden. His incessant complaints about the Biden family and the President's cognitive abilities had gained some traction. Biden was still a point or two behind Trump in national polls, but he trailed in most battleground states.
Trump's attacks on Harris aren't landing outside his base. Calling her an extremist and a liar just doesn't play well with either the mainstream media or the independents.
What are her extremist views? What is she lying about? The country seems tired of Trump, who now has most of the comments about age. At 78, he is almost 20 years older than Harris and only three younger than Biden. With the change of the democratic candidate, the situation is reversed. Trump makes many verbal mistakes and gives long, rambling and incoherent speeches.
He also makes clear his attack on democracy:
Trump chose as his running mate a relatively unknown first-term senator, JD Vance, who has strange views on many subjects. For starters, he wants people with children to get more votes. Trump is already regretting that choice.
The pluses of Harris
Harris has come out of the gate extremely quickly. Within days, she won the votes needed for the nomination at the Democratic convention in Chicago next month. Her candidacy has raised a mountain of money from donors big and small. She is campaigning aggressively and is also considering choosing her deputy. It would be hard for him to be wrong. The Democratic establishment has half a dozen highly qualified officials from swing states.
Biden was behind, but still far from losing. Harris seems to have inherited his support. She is also winning with independents and those who may have voted for third-party candidates. Her support among women and younger voters is better than Biden's.
Harris in her words after the meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu proved capable. Without shying away from Biden's support for Israel's right to defend itself, she strongly emphasized her sympathy with ordinary Palestinians and the need to end the Gaza war. "I will not be silent," she vowed. Netanyahu will do everything he can to help Trump. But Harris will have taken an important step in healing the rift within her party and winning back the Arab and Muslim American vote in Michigan and other battlegrounds.
Towards the realization of the goal
There are more than 100 days left until the November 5 elections. But for now Harris has the ball and is moving it quickly toward the goal line. Expect Trump to respond with all the lies and dirty tricks he can muster. He will continue to call her a liar and an extremist. He will have doubts about her right to run, as she is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India. His campaign will revive the controversial positions she took in the past.
