Pain and sadness in Switzerland

Swiss authorities have provided new updates on the devastating fire that occurred on New Year's Eve in the mountain resort of Crans-Montana, describing the event as one of the worst tragedies the country has experienced.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin told a news conference that it was “one of the worst tragedies our country has ever experienced.” He said the incident had deeply shocked Swiss society, adding that around 100 people were injured and that many of the victims were young. “This happened in a country dedicated to life and joy… the contrast is terrible,” Parmelin said, announcing that national flags would be flown at half-mast for five days of mourning.

At the same conference, the commander of the Valais cantonal police, Frédéric Gisler, gave a detailed overview of the incident and the response of the emergency services. According to him, smoke was noticed at around 01:30 in the morning, and only a few seconds later a witness notified the police. At 01:32, the first patrols arrived at the scene, providing first aid and transporting the injured to hospitals. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control, while at 04:14 a helpline was opened for the families of the victims.

According to the updated balance, about 40 people have lost their lives, while 115 others have been injured, most of them in serious condition. Gisler stressed that, because Crans-Montana is an international resort, it is suspected that there are also foreign nationals among the victims. The identification of the dead, according to the authorities, could take several days and remains the main priority in the coming hours and days.
