The Foreign Ministers of the European Union sent a strong message to Russia with the decisions taken at their last meeting in Brussels. The significant increase in the aid of the bloc to the Ukrainian armed forces with 5 billion euros will be done in the framework of the European Peace Instrument (EPF) for the assistance to the country facing the Russian aggression. The European Council announced in a statement that for this purpose it has created a special Assistance Fund for Ukraine (UAF) within the EPF.
The newly established fund will enable the EU to further support the evolving needs of the Ukrainian military through the provision of lethal and non-lethal military equipment as well as training and exercises.
"With this fund, we will continue to support Ukraine to protect itself from Russia's war of aggression with everything it needs and for as long as it needs," said Borrell.
EU foreign ministers also agreed to sanction 30 Russian officials believed to be involved in the death of opposition leader Navalny in an Arctic prison last month.
"We agreed on sanctions against those responsible for the murder of Alexei Navalny. The EU will impose travel bans and asset freezes on prison officials it considers responsible for the death of the opposition leader," said Borrell.
