The EU will triple humanitarian aid to Gaza

The European Commission said on Saturday that it will triple humanitarian aid to Gaza. This decision was taken after the European Union faced criticism for its response to the situation there.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday, the Commission said.

"The Commission will immediately increase the humanitarian aid to Gaza by 50 million euros," von der Leyen said in a statement.

"This will increase the amount of aid to 75 million euros."

"We will continue our close cooperation with the UN and its agencies to ensure that this aid reaches those who need it in the Gaza Strip," said von der Leyen, among other things.

Israel has cut off water, electricity and aid to the Gaza Strip, following attacks by the militant group Hamas on Israeli soil a week ago.

The state has ordered 1 million Palestinians to move from north to south Gaza as it prepares for an eventual military offensive to fight Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday afternoon that "a new phase is coming", after he met with military officials.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has called on Saturday for the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

"While Israel has a legitimate right to protect people and make sure that something like this never happens again, it is extremely important that we all take care of civilians and we are working in that direction," he said. Blinken said. /REL
