The EU has called on Russia to join the UN-backed Black Sea deal to export wheat from Ukraine and stop its illegal occupation and blockade by its military.
This is what the representative of the Foreign Policy Committee, Peter Stano, said when asked about the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
"When Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain agreement in July, it effectively undermined the most sustainable way to export Ukrainian wheat to the world market.
This is not acceptable", said Peter Stano.
He pointed out that Russia is attacking port infrastructure for the export of Ukrainian grain, including the Danube region, as well as alternative ways to export grain, endangering millions of vulnerable people around the world.
The representative of the Commission also added that Russia is taking advantage of this situation because world prices are rising and it is increasing its exports.
