Germany says "No" to nuclear power plants, Olaf Scholz: Case closed

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in the "Interview of the Week" with Deutschlandfunk that nuclear energy is a "dead horse". He reaffirmed his skepticism about setting a subsidized energy price for the industry.

Scholz: The debate over the use of nuclear energy is over

With the end of exploitation, the dismantling of nuclear power plants that still exist has also begun, Chancellor Scholz said. If we would still like to build new nuclear power plants, it would take 15 years and we would spend 15 to 20 billion euros per plant. Recently, the FDP and CDU have called for a return to nuclear power. The AfD is also in favor of the continued use of nuclear energy.

Scholz skeptical about subsidizing energy prices for industry

The chancellor spoke with reservations about the demands of economic associations and part of the government coalition to subsidize the price of electricity for the industry. Of course, "the proposition of who to give money to is easier to make than the proposition of where this money should come from," said Scholz. He emphasized that there are only three financing options for reducing the price of electricity for certain enterprises. Or customers or taxpayers have to pay afterwards. The third option is going into debt. However, the chancellor said that it is clear that there are very different opinions on this topic in the Parliament. This is why the question of where these billions will be found should be "naturally" included in any discussion. In this context, Scholz recalled that the real task is the structural reduction of the electricity price.

Scholz defends the "Law of Growth Opportunities"

The chancellor defended the latest Growth Opportunities Bill, approved by the cabinet, which contains measures to support and ease the economy. These are not only related to the possibility that someone pays less taxes, but also to the stimulation of investment activity. We "calibrated this precisely," Scholz continued. The arrival and investment of international and German semiconductor manufacturers make liars of all those who say that today no one wants to invest in Germany anymore. On the contrary, more favorable depreciation rules and opportunities for loss posting are "exactly the boost the economy needs right now."

There are no new separate debts

In general, Chancellor Scholz spoke against new special debts outside the regular budget. It cannot be a rule that the state enters into debts of 100 or 200 billion euros per year, he said. In terms of tax revenue, he thought we should look at how to manage all the money we have. If the economy does not want the debt rein lifted, it should also say that it is good that the federal government is supporting the economy broadly, but not with programs worth hundreds of billions, Scholz emphasized. Recently, the State Control Service had criticized the posting to the so-called special debt funds of the federation and had described it as an expenditure that escaped from the budget.

"G20 remains important"

Asked what could be done differently in competition with China, for example, the chancellor said he wanted to offer "equal partnerships". For example, we can help the countries of the South not to be satisfied with the extraction of raw materials, but also to process them locally. The G20 summit will be held next week in India. /DW
