Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov will be replaced this week by Rustem Umerov.
Umerov, 41, is a member of the opposition Holos party and has held the position of head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine since September 2022.
In July 2022, he visited Albania, where he also met with Taulant Balla, at that time chairman of the socialist parliamentary group.
It has played an important role in various humanitarian efforts, including the exchange of prisoners of war, political prisoners, children and civilians, as well as the evacuation of civilians from occupied areas.
Umerov has also been a key member of the Ukrainian delegation engaged in negotiations with Russia regarding the UN-backed grain deal.
He serves as deputy head of the permanent delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, representing the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people, and acts as an advisor to the former Speaker of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Mustafa Dzhemilev.
Since December 2020, Umerov has assumed the role of co-chair of the Crimean Platform diplomatic initiative.
