Biden blames former President Trump for blocking border security bill

President Joe Biden said a bipartisan bill providing financial aid to Ukraine and funding to increase security on the U.S.-Mexico border has stalled in Congress. The Democratic president blamed former President Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner for president, for the situation.

He called on Congress to "show determination" and oppose the former President.

The bill appears headed for failure after Senate Republicans signaled their opposition. This leaves President Biden without a clear path to advance aid to Ukraine through Congress.

"The signals are that this bill will not go to the Senate. Why? The simple reason: Donald Trump," said President Biden. "Because Donald Trump thinks it hurts him politically."

Concerns about immigration have become one of the main issues in this year's presidential campaign, as former President Trump prepares for another showdown with President Joe Biden.

Mr Trump has urged Republicans in Congress to reject the cross-party deal on border security, which was made public on Sunday.

The $118 billion budget bill, which also includes aid to Israel and Ukraine, is losing support in the Capitol. House Republicans have spoken out against it, while more than 20 Republican senators have said the legal provisions are not strict enough.

Some Democrats have also opposed the bill because they say some of its measures treat immigrants too harshly.

President Biden did not mention disagreements among Democrats, but blamed Republicans for bowing to pressure from former President Trump, who he said contacted Republican lawmakers to "frighten them into voting against this proposal."

"Frankly, they have an obligation to the American people to show resolve and do what is right," President Biden said.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also criticized former President Trump for increasing opposition to the border security deal.

"Donald Trump prefers to continue the chaos at the border in order to use it in the election campaign, rather than allow the Senate to do the right thing and provide solutions to the situation," said Mr. Schumer. / VOA
