Powerful earthquakes have killed more than 2,000 people in Afghanistan, a Taliban government spokesman said on Sunday. They were some of the deadliest earthquakes to hit the country in two decades.
The figures could not be independently verified, but if accurate, the toll would eclipse the devastation of an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan in June 2022, striking a rugged mountainous region and flattening houses made of stone, brick and mud. and killing at least 1,000 people.
Saturday's 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck a densely populated area near Afghanistan's fourth-largest city, Herat. The earthquake was followed by strong aftershocks.
The United States Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was about 40 kilometers northwest of the city of Herat. The earthquake was followed by three very strong aftershocks, with magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9 and 5.5, as well as smaller aftershocks.
On Sunday, people used makeshift tools to pull the dead and injured from the rubble in Herat, clinging to rocks and debris.
A video shared online shows people trying to pull out a little girl, who was covered up to her neck in the rubble of the collapsed building. In the video, a hand can be seen on the baby's body as they pull the little girl out of the rubble. Rescuers said it was the baby's mother. It is not clear if the mother survived.
