President Donald Trump plans to give the Iranians a limited deadline to come up with a unified proposal to get diplomatic negotiations back on track, two sources familiar with the internal discussions told CNN.
It was not immediately clear whether Trump's message had reached the Iranians. The administration does not want to extend the ceasefire indefinitely and does not want to give Iran time to drag out the talks further.
The president was wary of extending the initial ceasefire beyond Wednesday's deadline, the sources said. He wants a deal finalized as soon as possible and had hoped that the pressure of a deadline would force the Iranians to the negotiating table before the ceasefire expired.
However, top Trump aides believe there are divisions within the Iranian leadership and that Iranians lack consensus on their stance to empower negotiators to finalize a deal, CNN previously reported.
Trump's decision to give Tehran more time to present a "unified proposal," as he characterized it, reflects the administration's desire to resolve the war diplomatically, as well as its reluctance to resume kinetic strikes, the sources said.
Meanwhile, the president believes the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will continue to put pressure on the Iranians as negotiations continue. But the sources said there is also an acceptance among Trump's team that the longer the blockade continues, the more damage it will cause to the global economy.
