Iran-Oman talks on Hormuz/ Tehran demands tax, Muscat calls for ceasefire!

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route that runs through the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, in response to joint US-Israeli attacks last month. The strait normally carries about a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies.

The two countries have been holding talks for the past two weeks and have focused on establishing a "safe passage protocol" to allow access for commercial ships.

This would force oil and gas tankers transiting the narrow waterway to register with Iran and agree to fly the flag of a non-hostile state, essentially acknowledging Iranian authority over the strategic waterway.

In a post on X this morning, Oman's foreign ministry said that Oman and Iran held talks at the deputy foreign minister level to discuss possibilities to ensure the smooth passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

" During the meeting, experts from both sides presented a number of visions and proposals that will be studied ," the ministry said in a post.

The proposals appear to be part of a latest effort by energy-rich Oman, which has previously mediated between Washington and Tehran, to avoid a wider escalation of the war.

But the Omani source told CNN that the proposed agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz would be "difficult to achieve under war conditions," adding that "the best solution so far remains an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards a comprehensive end to hostilities."

The source described President Donald Trump's threats to escalate US attacks on Iran after a new 48-hour deadline expires on Monday morning as "alarming."

"Escalation risks untold suffering in many parts of the world ," the source told CNN.

An Iranian parliamentary committee last week approved a proposal to collect a tax on ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, but said ships from the US, Israel and countries that imposed sanctions on Iran would not be allowed through.
