Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has been "crucified" after being accused of using more than 12,000 euros of public money to buy designer dresses and trying to hide her spending.
The 66-year-old has been accused of embezzling taxpayers' money after details of her excessive spending while in office were revealed.
The revelations come after a publication by the French anti-corruption organization Mediapart, which in an article titled "Expense reports: Anne Hidalgo is still angry about transparency" refers to some of the mayor's luxurious spending, such as that in November 2023 she spent 3,067 euros on a Burberry coat and in March 2024 she made a purchase of 2,300 euros at the Dior store.
In fact, the organization, after collecting the mayor's expenses following a request for free access to information from Civic Transparency, an anti-corruption group, says that Hidalgo spent around 84,265 euros on clothes and travel expenses, which she then requested to be reimbursed by the state.
However, Mediart reports that she herself refused to provide transparency regarding her spending, and when finally asked about it, the 66-year-old defended her behavior, arguing that the purchases were legal.
