US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Sunday - an important stop on his whirlwind tour of the region, where he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani.
At a press conference from Baghdad, he said he had a productive meeting with the Iraqi prime minister, adding that hard work is being done to ensure that the conflict in Gaza does not escalate.
" We had a good honest conversation and more broadly we are working hard to make sure that the conflict in Gaza does not escalate to other countries ," he said.
He added, among other things, that Israel has raised important questions about how the humanitarian pauses will work, and the US promised it should answer those questions very quickly.
" It's important that a pause advances a number of things - one of them being pawns. We are intensely focused on bringing them home ," he said.
Blinken went on to say that "everyone would welcome a humanitarian pause". He also noted that Sudan is working with its security forces to stop attacks by militia groups.
"No country wants to have militia groups involved in violent activities. This is clearly against Iraq's interests ," he said.
Before his stop in Iraq, Blinken made stops in Israel, Jordan, the West Bank and Cyprus. From Iraq, he will travel to Turkey.
