Spain's Eurovision Boycott, Prime Minister Sanchez: We're on the Right
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended his country's decision to not participate in Eurovision this year in protest. In a video posted on the X platform, Sanchez said Spain is "convinced that it is on the right side of history."

"This year will be different. We will not be in Vienna, but we do so with the conviction that we are on the right side of history," he declared.

The European Song Contest, Eurovision Song Contest 2026, is taking place in Vienna this year, amid tensions and protests related to the war in Gaza.

According to reports, the first semi-final ceremony was accompanied by protests demanding Israel's exclusion from the competition.

Due to Israel's participation, public broadcasters from five countries, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia, have boycotted this year's edition.

Eurovision 2026 is being considered the contest with the lowest number of participants since 2003, with only 35 countries competing.
