Serbia is supported by autocratic regimes...
Although Serbia's seat at the EU-Western Balkans Summit was empty, its "interests" were represented in Brussels by Hungarian and Slovak prime ministers Viktor Orban and Robert Fico, which has slowed down the Union's enlargement and certainly does not help Belgrade compensate for the lack of reforms and the negative attitude of some individual member states.
Orban and Fico almost copied Vučić in their statements. As he entered the meeting of EU and Western Balkans leaders, Orban declared that Serbia is a key country in the region and that Brussels' behavior towards it is unfair and shameful.
Meanwhile, Fico said that the EU is unfair to Serbia and is preventing its membership because it is a "very proud, self-confident and sovereign" country, for which, according to him, there is no understanding in the EU.
Considering that decisions in the EU are made by consensus and that Orban and Fico, in some cases, can slow down or influence negative decisions regarding Belgrade, in circumstances where Serbia has not fulfilled what it has promised itself, the question arises whether their support facilitates or complicates Belgrade's position among member states.
This kind of support could objectively weaken Serbia's position in the EU. Not because Serbia has no other friends in the Union, it does have some, but because the association with leaders who are themselves under serious EU criticism for violating the rule of law only strengthens the perception that Serbia is systematically evading European standards. And if we see this in light of the decision not to have a representative at the EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels, which was held yesterday, where instead of an active presence and the opportunity to argue its case in front of the institutions and member states, it chose a symbolic protest and demonstrative distancing from the enlargement process, this is very problematic.

Given the fact that the Third Group of Chapters was not opened precisely because of the serious lack of progress in areas such as the rule of law, media freedom, and the functioning of institutions, reliance on leaders who are themselves under increased scrutiny by the EU cannot compensate for the lack of reforms or change the negative assessment.

One of the main reasons why EU enlargement has slowed down is countries like Slovakia and present-day Hungary, states that are experiencing democratic regression and are hindering media freedom and judicial independence. When this is added to their proximity to Russia, the question arises as to why the EU would accept new members with similar patterns of behavior and deviation from European values.
Instead of seeking support from countries that cannot realistically help the path to membership, and that, in fact, make it more difficult, analysts suggest that the next pro-European government in Serbia should urgently implement key reforms in the areas of democracy, media freedom and the rule of law, as well as clearly align itself with EU foreign policy positions and demonstrate a willingness to fully accept and promote European values.
This is the only way to ensure the real support of countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Poland, as well as the states of the region and the Baltic countries, and to pave the way towards full membership./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Danas"
