The United States Department of Justice has released a large block of documents related to the investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, known globally for his sex scandals and network of associates. The release of the documents came after a surprise decision by the Donald Trump administration to order the release of the materials, after years of blocking.
In total, about 300,000 pages have been released, including flight logs, contact books, investigation documents and other materials that aim to shed light on Epstein's "vast network" and promote accountability that many consider "long overdue."
Among the published materials are photos of former US President Bill Clinton. In one of the images, he is seen in a swimming pool with Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of Epstein, who was found guilty in 2021 of sex trafficking of minors and other violations related to the Epstein affair.
Another photo shows Clinton in a hot tub with an unknown woman, but the context of these images is unknown and their appearance in these documents does not imply any illegal action. The identification of individuals in the files is not evidence of guilt.
Clinton himself has previously spoken about his association with Epstein in his 2024 memoir, Citizen: My Life After the White House, writing: "Sitting on Epstein's plane to visit my foundation's work was not worth the years of questions that followed. I wish I had never met him at all."
Foreign media say the search system on these sites is currently problematic, so results for certain figures - including names like Donald Trump or Lord Mandelson - have not yet appeared.
Attorney General Pam Bondi's office said the Justice Department is following through on Trump's promise to be transparent and accountable for the actions of Epstein and his associates. Bondi said the first phase of disclosure is already illuminating the broad structure of Epstein's network and providing much-needed accountability to the public.
For his part, FBI Director Kash Patel declared that the agency is entering a "new era" of integrity and accountability:
"There will be no cover-ups, no missing documents, no stones unturned. Anyone who undermines this process will be swiftly prosecuted. Our oath is to the Constitution, and under my leadership, this promise will be honored without compromise."
The analysis of the 300,000 pages has just begun, and journalists and analysts are working to extract more details. While there is a lot of material to examine, including flight logs, emails, contact books and investigative documents, it remains unclear what else might emerge and which other figures might be indirectly linked to Epstein's network.
